Worked over a multiple of 8+4 stitches on a background of reverse stockinette stitch (minimum of 20 stitches). 

Example: 10 sts reverse stockinette stitch, 28 sts cable, 10 sts reverse stockinette stitch. 

Note: the pattern instructions are for the cable stitches, so between the markers. Purl the sts before 1st and after 2nd markers on RS and knit on WS. 

You'll need 2 stitch markers and a cable needle. 

  1. Row  (RS): K all.
  2. Row: K2, P to last 2 sts, K2. 
  3. Row: K all. 
  4. Row: same as Row 2.
  5. Row: K2, *C8B; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2. 
  6. Row: same as Row 2.
  7. Row 7: K all. 
  8. Row: same as Row 2.
  9. Row: K all. 
  10. Row: same as Row 2.
  11. Row: K6, *C8F; rep from * to last 6 sts, K6. 
  12. Row: same as Row 2.
  13. Row: same as row 2. 

Repeat  these 12 rows. 

  RS= Right side / K= Knit/ P= Purl/ st(s)= stitch(es)/ rep= repeat

C8B= Cable 8 sts back/ C8F= Cable 8 sts front st(s)= stitch(es)
